Welcome to Reception! (2025-26)

Welcome Back!

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you all enjoyed a lovely half‑term break and found plenty of time to rest and recharge. We are very excited to begin a new half‑term together and to explore our new topic with the children!

Our New Topic: People Who Help Us

This half‑term, we will be learning all about the wonderful people in our community who help us every day. We will explore different jobs, look at the roles people play in keeping us safe and healthy, and think about what we might like to be when we grow up. Our learning environment—both indoors and outdoors—will be filled with activities inspired by the important jobs we are discovering.

We also hope to welcome some special visitors from our local community who can talk to the children about their roles. We will learn about their equipment, uniforms, vehicles and the skills they need for their jobs. We will also be focusing on keeping ourselves healthy and practising good hygiene routines.

How to Help at Home

  • Talk to your child about your own job or daily responsibilities.
  • When out and about, point out people in different roles (postal workers, shop assistants, bus drivers, etc.).
  • Look at simple non-fiction books or pictures about different jobs.
  • Encourage role play at home—dressing up, toy doctors’ kits, pretend shops, etc.

Literacy

In Literacy, we will be enjoying a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books linked to our topic. We will continue practising correct letter formation and begin writing short sentences and captions. The children will also learn lots of new vocabulary, including words linked to different jobs.

We are especially looking forward to our visit to the Post Office, where the children will have the exciting opportunity to post a real letter home! This will help us understand the role of postal workers and how messages travel.

We will also be learning about questions—what they are, how they are different from statements, and thinking of thoughtful questions to ask our visitors. In Phonics, we will keep learning new sounds to support reading and writing.

How to Help at Home

  • Read together every day and talk about the characters, setting, and new words.
  • Encourage your child to spot letters and sounds in the environment (shop signs, posters, labels).
  • Practise writing simple sentences such as “I am a vet.” or “The bus is big.”
  • Let your child help write shopping lists or labels to build confidence in purposeful writing.
  • Play “Question or Not?” games—say a sentence and let your child decide if it’s a question.

Maths

In Maths, we will be playing lots of counting games and exploring numbers to 10 in depth. We will continue practising our number bonds to 5 and begin learning number bonds to 10. The children will also learn how to write simple addition and subtraction number sentences using a range of resources, including ten frames, Numicon, part–whole models and Multi-link.

How to Help at Home

  • Count objects around the house—teddies, steps, pieces of fruit, cars on the driveway.
  • Practise number bonds using everyday items (e.g., “I have 3 grapes and you have 2—how many altogether?”).
  • Play simple board games or dice games that encourage counting forwards and backwards.
  • Use household items to make simple addition/subtraction stories (“There were 5 apples, Daddy ate 1, now there are…?”).
  • Encourage your child to spot numbers everywhere—clocks, doors, buses, price labels.

Keep checking our weekly Tapestry updates to find out more about what we are learning week by week!
