Mathematics

Intent

At Disley Primary School, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Our intent is to develop confident, resilient and fluent mathematicians who can reason, solve problems and apply their mathematical understanding across the curriculum and in everyday life.

Our mathematics curriculum is based on the White Rose Education mastery approach, which places number at the heart of learning, carefully sequences knowledge through small steps, and prioritises deep understanding over acceleration. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections between mathematical concepts and develop a secure understanding before moving on.

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils, regardless of starting point, achieve success in mathematics. Where children grasp concepts quickly, they are challenged through rich reasoning, problem-solving and investigative tasks that deepen understanding rather than simply moving on to new content. This ensures that all learners are appropriately challenged and develop mathematical thinking at depth.

Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily using the White Rose Education schemes of learning as the main vehicle for curriculum delivery. Lessons follow a carefully structured progression of small steps, enabling pupils to build knowledge securely and make meaningful links within and across mathematical concepts.

Teaching is rooted in a mastery approach and incorporates:

  • Clear modelling and guided practice.
  • The use of mathematical talk and stem sentences.
  • Fluency, reasoning and problem-solving opportunities within every unit of work.
  • The Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, where pupils use manipulatives and visual representations to develop conceptual understanding before moving to abstract methods.
  • Regular formative assessment to identify misconceptions and inform next steps in learning.

Teachers use White Rose resources alongside professional judgement to meet the needs of their classes. Pupils who secure learning quickly are provided with carefully planned extension tasks that promote deeper thinking, mathematical reasoning and application in unfamiliar contexts, ensuring challenge remains high for all learners.

Impact

The impact of our mathematics curriculum is that pupils develop a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and are able to apply their knowledge with confidence and accuracy. They become fluent in calculation, can reason mathematically and are able to solve increasingly complex problems. These are key principles of the White Rose mastery approach.

As pupils progress through school, they:

  • Demonstrate increasing confidence and enjoyment in mathematics.
  • Use mathematical vocabulary accurately to explain and justify their thinking.
  • Show resilience when faced with challenging problems.
  • Make strong progress from their individual starting points.
  • Are well-prepared for the next stage of their mathematical learning.

Assessment information, pupil voice, lesson observations and work in books demonstrate that pupils are building deep, connected and lasting mathematical understanding, enabling them to become successful and confident mathematicians.
